Want something different? Try the Pawpaw. Zone five hardiness with a tropical appearance. This well formed, small tree should be used oftener. The edible, late summer fruit has a banana-mango taste. The large drooping leaves turn an attactive yellow in the fall. Does best in moist, well-drained soils.
The large drooping leaves of the Pawpaw give it a tropical appearance. You can utilize the bold texture of the large leaves by situating it with fine-textured ornamental trees such as Paperbark Maple. It will also be very pleasing grouped with small leafed evergreens such as Spruce. Flowers will be most visible with a light-colored background or better yet, the blue sky on a clear, spring day. If you want fruit, you will need at least two trees for effective pollination.
