Dogwood (Kousa, 'Milky Way Select')

Cornus kousa ‘Milky Way Select’

Leafy branches of a Kousa Dogwood

Kousa Dogwood, or Cornus kousa, is an elegant tree. Exquisite trunk and bark with a diverse pattern of gray, tan, and brown especially as the tree ages. Lovely flowers. Burgundy, red, and orange fall colors - sometimes all three on the same plant! The Milky Way cultivar has more profuse flowering than the species. As it matures the branches develop a horizontal layering effect.

The Kousa Dogwood is much more amenable to culture than our native flowering dogwood. It tolerates adverse conditions better and is resistant to many of the pests and diseases that plague Cornus florida, including dogwood anthracnose. Mature height is 25’-30' with a spread of 15' to 30.' The Kousa tolerates shade quite well but will flower less conspicuously there than in full sun.
